Burning Questions...

About Burning Man:

So Catharsis, how'd your surround-sound software work out at Burning Man? Let's hear all about it if you care to share.

(BTW - Can't help but be reminded about the ancient Druidic practices that were very similar to Burning Man - except with the modern variant, I'm sure everyone comes out alive rather than well-done. ;))

The setup was fairly surreal. The speaker stacks were massive and the circle perimeter was wide; about ~120 feet. We were right on the north east corner of the playa, so out from the sound system was open land. Another part of the camp setup up an art installation called the "sonic runway". It was about 20 stations (pyramids) that you could walk under. Each station had a strobe and the light would pulse away from the sound system (basic beat detection) at the speed of sound. It looked awesome and really was starting when you stood at the end of the runway and saw the beats rushing out at you..

I had some technical trouble. The main A/D unit for the system (running Mac & PC w/ Nuendo and my custom software through SuperCollider). This knocked out my ability to use Nuendo and the PC for audio processing; this was a big bummer. I still was able to run my software through the Mac and things worked well still.

The sound of ambisonics on the system was really cool. You could really visualize the paths (parametric) and shapes the trajectories were following. One of the big bummers was that 98% of the people booked on the system were DJs; it was a "rave camp" after all. At least they had a Vestax mixer that outputted quad panning. I was able to place that in the 8 channel ambisonic panner and it sounded really good.

I still have mixed feelings about BM. There are a lot of positive aspects, but I kind of dislike how for many people it seems to be a "cultural closed loop". I probably will go again if I can participate with a large scale sound installation.

There was a little talk of doing a 16 or 24 channel system with flying speakers in a decent sized dome for next year, but that might have just been crazy talk... ;)

I'd really like to see the system put together this year go out again, but that might not happen.. :(

I should have some pictures soon and will be posting them to the Scream site (audio.egregious.net/scream/

The employs of the sound company, JKSound, out of SF want to continue working with me though. They were pretty impressed with the software. This is hearsay, but they might have connections to promote a concert with Terry Riley on decent multichannel using my software. That could be interesting!

      C,

Thanks for the details. Sounds like fun even with the complications.

"it was a "rave camp" after all."

Hmm - just what you've been trying to escape?

"I still have mixed feelings about BM. There are a lot of positive aspects, but I kind of dislike how for many people it seems to be a "cultural closed loop". I probably will go again if I can participate with a large scale sound installation."

An interesting assessment. One can imagine that the bigger something like this gets, the more 'complex' its theme becomes.

" should have some pictures soon and will be posting them"

      Will look fwd to that.

"a concert with Terry Riley on decent multichannel using my software. That could be interesting!"

Indeed - sounds exciting. Good luck with it, and send my best to Terry.

      ; )
